Google is protecting the site under the service called Project Shield. Project Shield states it’s purpose is to protect news sites and other free expression sites from attacks. The service is offered for free and you need to apply to be considered.
Project Shield is probably providing 500+ Gbps of protection to the KrebsOnSecurity.com blog. It was last reported the size of the attack on site was over 600+ Gbps. Project Shield offers to protect sites from attacks of any size.
