Amazon launches DDoS protection service

Big gorillaAmazon Web Services (AWS) customers can now order DDoS protection from Amazon. The new anti-DDoS service is called AWS Shield. The service will only protect content and assets that are hosted on AWS services. AWS will offer two tiers of AWS Shield.

Amazon will provide its existing AWS customers with a basic version of the shield service for free. While the more advance service that protects against more sophisticated attacks will require a 12 month contract commitment. Each month the AWS Shield service will cost at least $3,000 per month. With additional charges for each GB of data transfer used.

The launch of AWS Shield will probably result in Cloudflare losing some customers. Many Cloudflare customers also use AWS as their web hosting provider. Expect Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud to launch their own DDoS protection service for their respective customers in the near future.
